it all starts with a piece of fabric

My starting point for any design begins when I find a piece of lace, vintage table cloth, printed scarf, or trim that inspires me. From there I love to play around with that element, mixing with other materials or trying out different pattern placements on my dress form.

Inspired by the quirky early 2000s take on boho style, I mocked this bedjacket piecing together different scraps of embroidery and print, to create a patchwork effect. I love how the elements feel different enough but come together cohesively to create a fun flirty piece with lots of texture to it.
Sometimes my design process starts with a fabric that I fall in love with. I’m constantly looking for new laces and yarn dyes with new, unique layouts. This was a lace I sourced for the start of the Fall ‘21 season. I loved the geo zig-zag pattern in this lace, and loved playing around with the placement for a flirty, preppy take on a lace tunic.
For this design, I was inspired by a vintage embroidered table linen. I love the challenge of using small or sparse elements and seeing how I can utilize them. I mixed the embroidery with a lace trim scrap, splicing up the two elements and playing around with the placement.
If I have a piece of lace or trim that’s too delicate to work with, I’ll sketch into an idea either by hand or on my Ipad. I’ll then work on detailed callouts for the exact artwork and placement I want.
